Zoom Hacks: Tips and Tricks to Make Zoom Meetings Run Smoother

For many workers who spend more time at home, video chat in Zoom still feels like uncharted territory. You might consider using a third-party app such as Skype, Skype for Business or Google Hangouts. However, Zoom’s revenue hasn’t skyrocketed since the pandemic for no reason.

From keyboard shortcuts to virtual breakout rooms, here are some handy Zoom hacks to make your Zoom meetings run as smoothly as possible.

Avoid Being the Only One to Show Your Face

Sometimes it is difficult to predict which colleague will choose a particular meeting, so you should deactivate the checklist at a meeting “to avoid being the only one to show your face.”

If it is a real video chat at the end, you can turn off the camera before the meeting starts, or even when you are at the end of it, if that is the case.

You can also mute the microphone when you are in a meeting so that you are automatically mute during the meeting. You can do this by clicking the “Do it yourself” button in the upper right corner of the screen or by clicking on a button next to your name.

Understanding how to act on Zoom is important because virtual meetings aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Space Bar Mute

If you want to know how to improve Zoom meetings then you might be interested in a useful check box on the Audio tab. Once you’ve pressed this you can press and hold the space bar to mute the Zoom. This keeps you listening for as long as you press the space bar, and that’s about as long as you have a walkie-talkie. You can also temporarily mute it by pressing and holding the space bar while temporarily mute it.

There are some handy shortcuts for Zoom settings, including ones that mute or prevent sound, start and stop a screen split (Shift + Command + R) and invite participants (Command + I).

Nothing makes a meeting faster than a full one—in Zoom mode—and if you find it particularly hard to remember which ones, you can make your own.

On Mac, you can always use the Command + I key combination or simply select the enable global key combination field under the Shortcuts tab in the Settings.

You can also use Zoom shortcuts to hide the Zoom app from other windows, for example in Zoom Contacts. This opens a window where you can invite guests by copying the meeting URL, sending them an email to copy to their Zoom contact, copy from another platform, or copy and paste across platforms.

Recording

There are many reasons why you want to record a Zoom meeting: you might want a media interview, a virtual comedy show, or an academic lecture that you will need to study later. You might also want to consider saving your recording for your small business WordPress website.

If you do not align the meeting, you can disable the auto-record button and switch to the Record tab under the personal settings. Once you have logged into your Zoom account, tick the box and copy the URL from the clipboard to participate in your Zoom sessions. You can also record your meetings by organizing a meeting and clicking the “Record” button at the bottom of the Zoom screen.

You can choose where to save the recording and where to adjust the audio quality, such as the quality of the microphone, the volume, and the duration of your recording.
